The best things said about it
Dr. Stephen Covey's book is a great one to read, Clay. It's called The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. The number one habit of the seven, the first one, is to be pro that highly effective people are proactive, what John's talking about. They happen to things, things don't happen to them.
Dave Ramsey The Ramsey Show · Apr 2026 The seven habits of highly effective people yes um i read that in my early twenties yeah and i found so many of um the principles in that book what are what are the habits from that one uh seek first to understand than to be understood is one of them you know the notion of proactivity is one of.
It's kind of like uh Seven Habits of Highly Effective People you want to do work that is important but not urgent that's quadrant two in that book.
One of my favorite stories is from Stephen Covey. He tells the story of two tree cutters. The first tree cutter cuts one tree every single day. And in 30 days, he's cut 30 trees. The second woodcutter spends one day sharpening, the next day cutting.
Jay Shetty On Purpose with Jay Shetty · May 2026 And so, we need to begin with the end in mind, as Steven Cvy said in the seven habits of highly effective people.

Why people recommend it
The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey is a renowned self-help and motivational classic that outlines a principles-centered approach for solving personal and professional problems. On The Ramsey Show, Dave Ramsey frequently referenced the book to various callers, noting its long-standing presence on bestseller lists. He highlighted the first habit of being proactive, explaining that effective individuals make things happen rather than letting things happen to them, and he advised callers to begin with the end in mind when planning ahead or organizing their finances. Similarly, Jimmy Wales named the book on The Tim Ferriss Show as a frequent recommendation that helped him accomplish tasks effectively. In discussions about career management and productivity on ChooseFI and The Peterman Pod, Vincent Pugliese and David Patterson both pointed to the framework presented in the book, specifically the second quadrant focused on tasks that are important rather than urgent. Through these diverse discussions, speakers across multiple podcasts emphasized how Covey's enduring principles continue to offer valuable guidance for prioritizing responsibilities, planning for the future, and taking proactive control of one's personal and professional life.
