Why people recommend it

The Varieties of Religious Experience by William James is a foundational work of psychology and philosophy based on the author's landmark lectures on human consciousness and spirituality. Philip Goff recommended the book on The Tim Ferriss Show and the Lex Fridman Podcast as a brilliant starting point and one of the finest treatments of mystical experience and psychological types. Brian Greene similarly urged listeners on multiple episodes of The Joe Rogan Experience to read the 1902 text, noting that it offers a valuable and rational perspective on states of consciousness, spiritual encounters, and the diverse ways humans experience the divine. Greg Cowles mentioned on The Book Review that he returned to the text as one of his all-time favorite books. Meghan O'Gieblyn discussed revisiting James's work on EconTalk when preparing her own writing on faith and willpower. Across these appearances, speakers emphasized the enduring relevance of James's psychological insights, praising his empathetic and rigorous examination of religious phenomena, conversion, and mystical states. The book remains widely regarded as a masterpiece that bridges the gap between scientific inquiry and the profound depths of human inner experience.
