I love to quote what I think is the greatest book of leadership of the 20th century, which is The Godfather by Mario Puzo.

The best things said about it
Mario Puzo's books, they are so good, as good or better than the movies.
Mario Puzo's book The Godfather, it's so good, I think it was better than the movies.
I recently read, and I can't believe I had never read this book, but I read The Godfather, the original novel by Mario Puzo.
For him, even more important than the script was this notebook where he got pages of the Godfather novel, cut them out, pasted them on his own notebook, and then essentially annotated, underlined, added what I would call progressive summarization to deconstruct that story.

Why people recommend it
The Godfather by Mario Puzo is a classic crime novel that chronicles the fictional Corleone mafia family and explores themes of power, loyalty, and corruption. Chris Hayes mentioned on The Ezra Klein Show that he recently read the original novel and was surprised he had not encountered it earlier, featuring it in a book recommendation segment. David Rosenthal and Ben Gilbert both recommended Puzo's book series on Acquired as incredible reads that matched or even exceeded the quality of the famous film adaptations. Admiral James Stavridis recommended the novel on The Daily Stoic, describing it as one of the greatest books on leadership from the twentieth century. Megyn Kelly discussed the cultural footprint of the story on The Megyn Kelly Show alongside former mobsters Michael Franzese and Sammy Gravano, drawing parallels to real-life mafia paths and noting how the cinematic adaptations fundamentally shifted public perceptions of organized crime in America. Sammy Gravano shared his perspective on the high quality and impact of the film versions during the same broadcast. Furthermore, Andrew Stanton brought up the narrative on How I Write, using the character arc of Michael Corleone to illustrate how an acting coach explained the concept of a character spine and underlying motivation that persists throughout a story.
