Great Expectations is Charles Dickens's classic coming-of-age novel that follows the orphan Pip as he navigates class, ambition, and heartbreak in nineteenth-century England. Francine Prose discussed the novel on How I Write while reflecting on teaching enduring literature alongside other Victorian masterpieces, and Dean Koontz cited the book as a prime example of Dickens's unmatched mastery in portraying deep human emotion. John Williams mentioned the novel on The Book Review when discussing contemporary spin-offs inspired by characters like Magwitch, while Tina Jordan and Anna Dubenko shared their personal fondness for the book, with Dubenko noting that she had reread it numerous times beyond her school requirements. MJ Franklin brought up the iconic figure of Miss Havisham during a discussion about breakup books, and Mary Helen Immordino-Yang referenced the novel on Huberman Lab to critique rigid, traditional methods of teaching literature in schools. Russ Roberts also brought up the narrative on EconTalk to compare Pip's aspirations of entering a new world to themes in modern psychological research. Across these diverse conversations, the novel remains a touchstone for discussions on Victorian storytelling, character archetypes, and the emotional complexities of personal growth.
