The thing is, as you read Michael Lewis's book, it's hard to separate Bankman-Fried's illegal behaviors from the ones that were just sloppy or weird.

One of the most remarkable things about Going Infinite is how much detail Lewis provides about FTX's collapse without ever calling Sam a liar.

I'm just about done, and I'm starting to get angry at this point. It was very, very good. I think the first two-thirds were very, very good, and then Sam starts doing the crimes, and Michael Lewis is just, like, just irresponsibly soft on him.

Lewis has all of the ingredients for a great modern Icarus story of hubris and the fall, but making it work tonally would require him to see these things that are obvious warning signs as warning signs and structure his book that way, right? And then you get some catharsis in the payoffs.

Why people recommend it

Going Infinite by Michael Lewis is a non-fiction book that chronicles the meteoric rise and subsequent dramatic collapse of cryptocurrency tycoon Sam Bankman-Fried and his company, FTX. Stephen Dubner closed out an episode of Freakonomics Radio by highlighting the book and its author. Conversely, Robert Evans offered a sharp critique of the book on Behind the Bastards, characterizing it as a terrible account that failed to properly recognize Sam Bankman-Fried as a liar and criticizing how Lewis framed Bankman-Fried's childhood fault lines and missed the broader joke of the enterprise. Despite these criticisms, the book sparked widespread discussions about modern finance and technology. Jon Lovett referenced Going Infinite alongside Flash Boys on Pod Save America while interviewing Michael Lewis to question the underlying motives of modern tech corporations. Shaan Puri mentioned the author and the subject of FTX's downfall on My First Million. On Freakonomics Radio, the host discussed the intricate details provided in the book, noting how difficult it was for readers to separate Bankman-Fried's illegal activities from his bizarre and sloppy personal behaviors.
