I just have to mention I I'm sure Carl is a fine person who wrote The Very Hungry Caterpillar but and and we do own it but I it is not one of my favorite books to read to my toddler or to my grandchild or my kids when they were younger.

Why people recommend it

The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle is a universally beloved children's picture book that follows a ravenous insect's journey from a tiny egg to a beautiful butterfly, teaching young readers about counting, days of the week, and metamorphosis. The cultural staple was discussed on several podcasts from distinct parenting and literary perspectives. On How I Write, Tish Rabe listed Eric Carle's classic among the popular titles commonly read by military parents to connect with their children. Meanwhile, a discussion on EconTalk featured Erik Hoel and host Russ Roberts debating the nuances of parenting and shared cultural experiences. Hoel brought up The Very Hungry Caterpillar to illustrate that a distinct class of parents in the United States finds shared meaning and common reading experiences through enduring children's literature, noting its long-running success on best-seller lists. Conversely, Russ Roberts offered a counter-perspective during the same episode, mentioning that while he owned the book and respected the author, it was never personally one of his favorite titles to read aloud to his own children or grandchildren. These varied mentions underscore the book's massive reach and its prominent place in modern family life.
