Why people recommend it
Thomas Mann's The Magic Mountain is a monumental early twentieth-century philosophical novel that follows a young engineer named Hans Castorp during an extended, transformative stay at a tuberculosis sanatorium in the Swiss Alps. Dan Wang discussed the novel on Conversations with Tyler, comparing its narrative structure to Mann's earlier family saga Buddenbrooks and noting a personal preference for the latter's linear style. David Perell mentioned The Magic Mountain on How I Write, categorizing it alongside War and Peace as a notoriously challenging and ambitious literary work that required dedicated effort to conquer properly. John Williams shared a similar reading experience on The Book Review, recounting how he decided to force his way through the lengthy classic over the holidays and ultimately found himself thoroughly engrossed in its dense pages after the first hundred chapters. Furthermore, Brad DeLong named Mann's masterpiece as his favorite novel during a discussion with Tyler Cowen. Together, these podcast mentions highlight the enduring intimidation and ultimate reward of tackling Mann's sprawling exploration of European intellectual history, disease, time, and human philosophy prior to the outbreak of the First World War.
