In fact, his book, The Firm, is a book that changed my life because I was miserable in law school.
And somebody told me that there was this book that had come out. And I picked up a copy because I hated doing the academic work. It was The Firm. It was your book. I bet I stayed up two nights in a row reading this thing.
And I enjoyed The Firm. I mean, just to be clear, it was entertaining. But there’s a difference between being amused and entertained.
I reread The Firm about a year and a half ago I have no time for leisure reading at all.

Why people recommend it
The Firm by John Grisham is a gripping legal thriller published in 1991 that follows a young lawyer who joins a prestigious firm, only to discover it is a front for the mafia. Mel Robbins frequently featured the novel on The Mel Robbins Podcast, citing it as her final recommendation in a curated reading list and sharing how it profoundly altered her life. During multiple podcast episodes, including conversations featuring John Grisham himself, Robbins explained that she picked up the book while she was thoroughly miserable and struggling with the academic workload during law school. Desperate to escape her studies, she stayed up for two consecutive nights reading the thriller, an experience that ultimately became a pivotal turning point in her personal trajectory and reinvention. Grisham discussed the origins of the project, noting that he started writing it immediately after finishing his first novel in 1987. Furthermore, Grisham recounted the dramatic story of how a bootleg manuscript of the book miraculously found its way to Hollywood over Christmas, where someone masqueraded as his agent and distributed copies to various studios and production companies to spark immediate interest. Both host and guest reflected on the sleepless nights the novel caused readers, cementing its status as an iconic bestseller from an author renowned for shaping the legal thriller genre.

“In fact, his book, The Firm, is a book that changed my life because I was miserable in law school.”
“He has written some of the most iconic and award-winning legal thrillers ever. The firm, the pelican brief, the client, the rainmaker, runaway jury and a time to kill. All 52 of his books have been number one bestsellers. And I personally cannot wait for John's newest book. I've been looking for a page turner and John says, Oh, Mel,”

“My lost sleep reading it, so we're even. Yeah, well, I'm not losing sleep now, but I did back then, but I realized I probably read this somewhere. Write a page a day. I tell I said it a thousand times. Write it one page. If you're serious about writing anything, stop talking about it.”
“But a bootleg copy of the firm popped up in Hollywood over the Christmas break. And a guy got it out there. And I'm not sure what he did, but he pretended that he was my agent. And he ran 25 copies of it and sent it off to all the studios and published in production companies.”
“So you have my authority. He called back and he said, we just sold the film rights to the firm to Paramount Pictures for $600,000, which was more money that I'd made in 10 years of practicing law.”
