Why people recommend it
Life of Samuel Johnson by James Boswell is widely regarded as one of the greatest biographies ever written, capturing the wit, eccentricities, and profound intellect of the eminent eighteenth-century lexicographer. On The Book Review, Dwight Garner enthusiastically recommended the classic, emphasizing the sheer charm that radiates from Samuel Johnson on every single page. Tyler Cowen has also repeatedly praised the biography, naming it as one of his absolute favorites on EconTalk and further analyzing its unique structure on the Lex Fridman Podcast, where he described the work as an essentially co-authored philosophical project born from the deep interaction between subject and biographer. Readers and scholars continue to champion Boswell's masterpiece because it transcends standard biographical boundaries, offering an intimate, living portrait of a brilliant mind and serving as a masterclass in observation, dialogue, and literary portraiture.
