Recently, I gifted The Oceans and the Stars. Do you know Mark Hellprin? He's a guy who's a little older than I am and writes characters that are just about in my phase of life. Like a beautiful, luscious pros writer, really smart, wrote Soldier of the Great War and A Winter's Tale and Freddy and Frederica.

Why people recommend it
A Soldier of the Great War by Mark Helprin is an epic and sweeping historical novel that follows an elderly Italian man reflecting on his youth, art, and his harrowing experiences fighting on the Italian front during World War I. The book received high praise across multiple podcast episodes. On The Tim Ferriss Show, Rich Barton recommended Helprin's fiction, describing him as a brilliant prose stylist and noting that Soldier of the Great War stands out among his finest works. On EconTalk, Russ Roberts similarly lauded the novel as a literary masterpiece, admitting that many of Helprin's books have the emotional power to make the reader weep. Roberts also mentioned that he purchased and prioritized the book after a previous recommendation from Tyler Cowen, ultimately placing it among his top five favorite reads. Additionally, Brian Koppelman referenced the author on Conversations with Tyler while discussing the deep emotional resonance and heavy psychological cost of reading complex novels later in life. Guest Mark Helprin also appeared on EconTalk to discuss the realistic, Tolstoy-esque nature of the novel, contrasting its dramatic historical weight with his lighter comedic writings, cementing the book's reputation as a profoundly moving exploration of mortality, memory, and endurance.
