Jonathan Charles Rauch is an American author, journalist, and activist. After graduation from Yale University, Rauch worked at the Winston-Salem Journal in North Carolina, for National Journal, and later for The Economist and as a freelance writer. He is a senior fellow in governance studies at the Brookings Institution and a contributing editor of The Atlantic. He is also the author of books and articles on culture, economics, and public policy. Jonathan Rauch appeared as a guest on the podcast Honestly with Bari Weiss in an episode titled Can America Survive Without Christianity?, released in April 2025. During the conversation, Rauch referenced a book by Jerome E. Copulsky titled American Heretics. He described the work as a wonderful new book that explores historical dynamics surrounding the founding of the United States. Specifically, Rauch discussed how the nation's founders had to actively face down and navigate various attempts by Christian groups who were deeply unhappy that the newly formed country was not formally named or declared as an explicitly Christian nation in its official founding documents.
