Charles John Klosterman is an American author and essayist known for his writings on American popular culture, particularly rock music and sports. He has been a columnist for Esquire and ESPN.com and wrote "The Ethicist" column for The New York Times Magazine. Klosterman is the author of 13 books, including two novels and the essay collection Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs: A Low Culture Manifesto. He was awarded the ASCAP Deems Taylor award for music criticism in 2002. Appearing on The Daily Stoic and The Book Review podcasts, Klosterman discussed several books that left an impression on him. He referenced Jay McInerney's novel Bright Lights, Big City to illustrate the anxiety of feeling left out of sports culture, and discussed Bob Dylan's memoir Chronicles, noting Dylan's perspective that long songs with many verses are valuable for practicing memorization without context. Klosterman also shared fond memories of reading Richard Wright's Black Boy during childhood, expressed appreciation for Jonathan Franzen's Crossroads, and named George Orwell's Animal Farm as his favorite book of all time.
