The first book I read was Venture Deals. Be smarter than your lawyer and venture capitalist. Uh can't recommend it enough. Uh you need to know the insides and outs of what's going on.
The best things said about it
I read the best time it seriously it took me all of like last week because i read that venture deals book and i was like okay there are times when something like this might be happening and it might just be the lawyer being a jerk.
And then at the same time on the other end, you get all this like really esoteric advice on like I mean, Venture Deals is awesome, but it's dense and it's like This is much of legal jargon page.
Jason Calacanis This Week in Startups · May 2021 Why people recommend it
Venture Deals by Brad Feld and Jason Mendelson is a comprehensive guide designed to help entrepreneurs understand the intricate legal and financial mechanics of venture capital negotiations. Dejan Pralica strongly recommended the book on This Week in Startups, emphasizing that it equips founders with the knowledge needed to navigate terms better and advocate for themselves against lawyers and investors. Molly Wood also discussed the book on the podcast, noting a specific early chapter concerning clawbacks that kept her awake at night, and explaining how reading the text helped her evaluate whether aggressive deal terms stemmed from genuine risks or merely difficult legal counsel. Meanwhile, Jason Calacanis characterized the book as awesome while simultaneously describing it as dense and filled with esoteric legal jargon. Together, the speakers illustrated that while the text can be challenging and heavy with legal terminology, it remains an indispensable resource for startup founders seeking to master the complexities of fundraising and investor relations.
