The Known Citizen by Sarah E. Igo is a historical examination of privacy and its changing meaning in modern America. On The Ezra Klein Show episode titled Are We on the Cusp of a New Political Order?, broadcast on November 1, 2024, a guest recommended Sarah Igo's work, describing it as a very different kind of book focused on the history of privacy in modern America. The discussion touched upon broader questions of morality, community, and the ways in which contemporary social media has intensified concerns over privacy, forcing society to reevaluate what constitutes private versus public domains. The book provides a thorough historical backdrop to these modern anxieties, tracking how Americans have conceptualized and negotiated their personal boundaries, surveillance, and civic participation across the twentieth century and into the digital age, making it an essential read for understanding current debates surrounding personal data and public exposure.
