Why people recommend it
The Hustler by Walter Tevis is a classic psychological drama that delves deep into the intense, high-stakes world of competitive pool and the self-destructive nature of ambition. On The Joe Rogan Experience, Joe Rogan praised Walter Tevis as an amazing writer, emphasizing that the book functions just as much as a psychological character study as it does a story about the game of pool. Rogan repeatedly brought up the author and his notable works across several podcast episodes with guests like Moshe Kasher, Andrew Santino, Brian Redban, and Whitney Cummings, frequently connecting The Hustler to Tevis's other famous novels, The Queen's Gambit and The Color of Money. During a conversation with Moshe Kasher, Rogan highlighted the psychological complexity embedded within the narrative. Additionally, comedian Colin Quinn joined The Joe Rogan Experience to discuss the classic cinematic adaptation, praising the serious acting talents of Jackie Gleason and his memorable performance alongside Paul Newman. Through these various discussions, the podcast hosts and their guests continually celebrated the enduring legacy of Tevis's writing, noting how effectively the source material captures the tragic flaws, obsessive drives, and intense psychological battles of professional gamblers operating on the fringes of society.
