Well this this is an old one, the Programming Pearls by Jon I think I read it when I was a PhD student, but I think it's it's nice as showing how very talented programmers work, how they think about their programs.
The best things said about it
On the flip side, another really fun one, um, that's really tiny, programming pearls and like bit fiddling and, um, cute little algorithms and neat stuff like that, which surprisingly we still do today.
Why people recommend it
Programming Pearls by Jon Bentley is a classic computer science text that uses practical problems and elegant code solutions to illustrate fundamental programming concepts. Xavier Leroy recommended the book on The Peterman Pod during the episode Creator of OCaml: Functional Programming, Formal Verification, Programming Languages, noting that he read it while he was a PhD student and praising it for demonstrating how very talented programmers think about and structure their programs. Additionally, Greg Kroah-Hartman recommended the volume on The Pragmatic Engineer during the episode How Linux is built with Greg Kroah-Hartman, describing it as a really fun, tiny book filled with bit fiddling, cute little algorithms, and neat ideas that engineers still utilize today. Both speakers emphasized the enduring value of the publication, pointing out that despite its age, the problem solving strategies and algorithmic insights contained within its pages remain remarkably relevant to modern software development practices. The book continues to be celebrated by experienced engineers as an essential resource for anyone looking to understand the craft of writing efficient and well thought out code.
