Why people recommend it
Our Man by George Packer is an acclaimed biography detailing the life and career of the prominent American diplomat Richard Holbrooke. On an episode of The Ezra Klein Show titled How Biden’s Middle East Policy Fell Apart, Frank Foer recommended the biography when asked for his favorite book recommendations, noting that it is written with the engaging style of a novel and had greatly informed his own thinking. Ezra Klein echoed this sentiment during the same discussion, mentioning that he had returned to read biographies of American diplomats and counted Packer's work among his absolute favorites. On an episode of The Book Review titled A Trilogy About the American Revolution Begins, Greg Coles also recommended the title, sharing that while his personal reading usually leaned toward fiction and poetry, this expansive biography had thoroughly captured his attention. Coles reiterated this book recommendation at the conclusion of the segment, emphasizing the deep impression the biographical narrative left on him. Through these thoughtful podcast mentions, the volume is celebrated not only as a compelling portrait of an influential diplomat but also as a masterclass in modern biographical writing.
