Why people recommend it

Metamorphoses by Ovid is a foundational epic poem in classical mythology that chronicles the history of the world through various transformative myths. On an episode of Stuff You Should Know, Josh Clark mentioned Ovid's work to explain the literary origin of the Pygmalion myth and the famous psychological effect named after it. Later, on Conversations with Tyler, Tyler Cowen asked guest Shadi Bartsch how Ovid's masterpiece completes the broader picture of Roman political thought alongside other classical writers like Virgil and Lucan. Both podcasts underscored the enduring relevance of Ovid's narrative framework in Western culture, whether through psychological concepts or political philosophy. The speakers utilized the epic poem to anchor discussions on human behavior, storytelling traditions, and the complex relationship between art and power in antiquity. Through these mentions, audiences were reminded of the deep roots that modern idioms and critical theories share with classical literature.
