I've dipped into James several times, finished it twice, and I actually really recommend listening to the audio version if any of you are audiobook listeners, cuz that's very rewarding and adds a lot to it.

James is a total exception in the sense of being commercially viable, obviously worthy. It just hits so many marks.

We have discussed on this podcast the book James by Everett which to me from the moment it published earlier this year seemed like it was always going to be one of those books that was really going to dominate the conversation for all of 2024.

Why people recommend it

James by Percival L. Everett is a compelling and critically acclaimed reimagining of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn told primarily from the perspective of the enslaved character Jim. On The Book Review podcast, Gilbert Cruz directed listeners back to a previous book club discussion dedicated to the novel, while also prompting Joumana Khatib to explore Everett's distinct approach to the classic story. Joumana Khatib shared that she had dipped into the novel several times and ultimately finished it twice, strongly encouraging audiobook enthusiasts to experience the version because the narration proved very rewarding and added significant depth. MJ Franklin later reflected on the book during a year-end review of literature, citing it as a cultural touchstone alongside other titles that managed to dominate public conversation during its initial release. John Maher also examined the book in connection to the publishing industry, noting the massive publicity and marketing investments behind major titles like this one. Additionally, Emily Aiken highlighted the book as a rare commercial and artistic success that struck a chord with readers, while Ryan Holiday brought up the work to examine its provocative reframing of well-known literary figures.
