Finding Freedom

Why people recommend it

Finding Freedom by Ruby West Jackson and Walter T. McDonald is a historical non-fiction work telling the untold story of Joshua Glover, a freedom seeker whose escape from slavery and subsequent rescue became a pivotal moment in abolitionist history. On an episode of The Ezra Klein Show titled Wisconsin Is Key to Election Victory. Can Kamala Harris Win It?, guest Ben Wickler shared the book with host Ezra Klein as part of his recommended reading list. Wickler brought up the text to highlight important regional history connected to Wisconsin, shedding light on the state's deep ties to the abolitionist movement and the broader struggle for human rights in America. The book details the harrowing journey of Glover, his recapture under the Fugitive Slave Act, and the courageous community resistance that ultimately helped him secure his freedom. By recommending Finding Freedom, Wickler connected past local political struggles with contemporary civic engagement, reminding listeners of the historical weight carried by the geography of key swing states. The discussion served to emphasize how regional histories of resistance and justice continue to shape local political identity and community values today.
