Why people recommend it
Epictetus by Epictetus comprises the surviving teachings and discourses of the ancient Stoic philosopher on self-governance, reason, and personal resilience. The philosophical works were referenced across multiple podcast episodes. On The Joe Rogan Experience, Ryan Holiday noted that Theodore Roosevelt packed a copy of Epictetus for his challenging journey documented in River of Doubt. During another episode of The Joe Rogan Experience, Gad Saad reflected on how arriving independently at thoughts similar to those of Epictetus two millennia prior creates a connection with the ancient philosopher. On The Daily Stoic, Karen Duffy discussed a passage from Marcus Aurelius's Meditations expressing gratitude to his teacher Rusticus for lending him a personal copy of Epictetus, emphasizing how receiving the book illuminated a path for Marcus just as it has for modern readers. Finally, on The Rubin Report, C. Bradley Thompson mentioned Epictetus as an essential ancient author whose moral philosophy John Adams recommended for teaching his son self-governance.

“At the beginning of 'Meditations,' where Marcus thanks all his teachers and specifically Rusticus for lending him his copy of Epictetus from his library, you realize that 20 centuries ago, someone gave this man a book, and a light went on for him—the switch flipped, just as it did for you and for me.”
