Why people recommend it
Educated by Tara Westover is a bestselling memoir that follows the author's remarkable journey growing up in a strict and isolated survivalist family in rural Idaho before eventually escaping to pursue a PhD from Cambridge University. On How I Write, Rob Henderson praised the book as one of the finest memoirs he had ever read, commending its exceptional quality and style. Pamela Paul introduced the memoir on The Book Review as a work that commanded widespread critical consensus upon publication, while Jim Mullane recommended it on Modern Wisdom as a phenomenal and engaging page-turner. The podcast has repeatedly revisited the book; host Gilbert Cruz hosted Tara Westover for a dedicated interview, and Alexandra Alter discussed its massive sales trends, comparing its surprising trajectory to the publishing phenomenon of J.D. Vance's Hillbilly Elegy. Michael Lewis referenced the narrative on the same program to draw parallels with the upbringing of Charity Dean, and Dave Ramsey similarly categorized the book alongside classic stories of individuals overcoming wild and difficult environments on The Ramsey Show. Readers and podcast guests frequently highlight the memoir for its poignant exploration of resilience, family loyalty, and the transformative power of self-education against overwhelming odds.
