Why people recommend it
Diet for a New America by John Robbins is a prominent health and lifestyle book that critiques modern food production systems and advocates for a plant-based diet for ethical, environmental, and personal health reasons. Rick Rubin mentioned on The Joe Rogan Experience that a friend gave him the book with the promise that reading it would permanently ruin his desire to eat chicken, which successfully prompted Rubin to adopt a vegan lifestyle. Rip Esselstyn also referenced John Robbins's work on The Rich Roll Podcast when recalling the scarce selection of resources available when he first wrote his own book on plant-based nutrition. Hakim Tafari discussed the book on the same podcast, explaining how a yogi acquaintance named Etienne introduced him to the text and fundamentally changed his perspective on health and vitality. Across these discussions, the speakers highlighted the profound, lasting impact the book has had on personal dietary choices, ethical awareness, and the broader cultural movement toward plant-based living over the past several decades, cementing its status as an influential classic in the health and wellness space.
