Taylor Lorenz is an American journalist and technology columnist who covers Internet culture. She has written for The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Daily Beast, Business Insider, and The Daily Mail, and has since left legacy media for independent, alternative media. In 2023, she published a book called Extremely Online: The Untold Story of Fame, Influence, and Power on the Internet. In 2024, Lorenz left The Washington Post after posting an image on Instagram labeling then-U.S. president Joe Biden as a war criminal, which sparked an internal investigation. She then began a newsletter, User Mag, and a podcast, Power User. Lorenz has been a frequent target of online harassment. In 2025, she garnered criticism after describing the killing of Brian Thompson by Luigi Mangione as a moral good. Appearing on the Big Technology Podcast, Lorenz discussed her book Extremely Online. She noted that near the end of the book, she argued that people do not want to live in a less online or less connected world. She also talked about the women she interviewed whose labor is frequently disrespected because outsiders view the creator job as easy. Lorenz addressed the personal effects of online attention, acknowledged that fame is explicitly part of her book's title, and reflected that she could have addressed algorithms more extensively, comparing her work to Kyle Chayka's discussions on the topic.
