Letter to the American Church
Eric Metaxas is an American author, speaker, and conservative radio host. He has written three biographies, including Amazing Grace: William Wilberforce and the Heroic Campaign to End Slavery, Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy, and Martin Luther: The Man Who Rediscovered God and Changed the World. He has also published a memoir titled Fish Out of Water: A Search for the Meaning of Life, alongside books such as If You Can Keep It and Letter to the American Church, in addition to writing humor, children's books, and scripts for VeggieTales. During an appearance on The Jordan B. Peterson Podcast, Metaxas discussed several of his own published works and related theological texts. He talked about Dietrich Bonhoeffer's book The Cost of Discipleship, highlighting its famous discussion of cheap grace and the excuses used by German theologians and pastors at the time. Metaxas also reflected on his own 2010 biography of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, using it to establish historical parallels between the silent German church and the modern American church. Furthermore, he spoke at length about his short book Letter to the American Church, describing the bold choice of its title, the humility required to write it, the palpable and urgent sense of divine inspiration he felt while writing it, and its specific intended audience of Christians who claim to believe in the God of the Bible.

“And that actually is I mean, I wrote that in my previous one of my previous books called If You Can Keep It. And the revolution book is just the narrative of how it all how it all happened and the sacrifices people made which are frankly staggering staggering sacrifices.”
“This most recent book, which is my shortest book, A Letter to the American Church, is the first time I have ever written something specifically only for those who claim to be Christians.”
“I don't know how some people will take this, but I've never felt that God called me to write something the way He did this book.”
“You know, if you think of the title A Letter to the American Church, it would be natural to think what kind of hubris are we talking about here, that somebody would dare to write a letter to the American church as though he's a modern-day Paul or something like that.”
“I don't mean this in any mystical sense, but I was very sober-minded about writing something with the title A Letter to the American Church.”
“The reason I wrote it, in a nutshell, is that in 2010, I came out with my longest book, a biography of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the German pastor who was involved in the plot to kill Hitler.”
“It was impossible for me to avoid the thought that just as the silence of the church in Germany opened the door to hell on Earth, which we now know because we know what happened, and of course, I documented it in my Bonhoeffer book and in this new booklet to the American church.”
“It was impossible for me to avoid the thought that just as the silence of the church in Germany opened the door to hell on Earth, which we now know because we know what happened, and of course, I documented it in my Bonhoeffer book and in this new booklet to the American church.”
“But the thesis of this book, A Letter to the American Church, is that precisely as the German church was silent, and precisely as that opened the door to hell to every kind of evil, it is the silence of the church in America now that is similarly opening the door to hellish things on a number of fronts.”
“The only time I felt something more palpable of God's inspiration was in writing A Letter to the American Church.”
“But as I say, it kind of became pointed with A Letter to the American Church because of the seriousness of what I was writing.”
“And that's why in A Letter to the American Church, I'm writing specifically to those people, Christians who claim to believe in the God of the Bible, to believe that Jesus defeated death on the cross.”
“One of the theses of my book, A Letter to the American Church, is that just as the German church drifted tragically in its conception of what is faith, so too the American church has drifted.”
“But I'm talking in this last book, Letter to the American Church, specifically to those who already claim to believe this, and I say, listen, if you believe this, you're on the hook for actually leading the way in showing people what courage looks like, in showing people that no, there is this thing called truth, and we are made”
“You know, my Bonhoeffer book, which is a 600-page biography of a German pastor who saw these things happening and knew that he must speak out against it.”
“In the course of writing my new book, the shortest book, 'Letter to the American Church,' I came to the conclusion that as horrific as it is to think about what the silence of the German church led to, the silence of the American church now, if we do not repent and begin to speak out boldly against every one”
“The thing with my book, "Donald Drains the Swamp", I just happen to have a copy here, "Donald Drains the Swamp," is that even though it's aimed at adults”
“I wrote a book, I don't have a copy here, but if I could give a copy to everyone in your audience, everyone in America, it's called, "If You Can Keep It."”
“So I wrote my book, "If You Can Keep It" specifically to put in a small, easily readable book, the very basics of what one needs to know to get it.”
“There's a part in my book, "If You Can Keep It." I remember in fifth grade, an old teacher, her last year, let us outside on June 14th”
