Derek Kreifels appeared on The Jordan B. Peterson Podcast to discuss state treasurers and financial matters. During the episode titled The ESG Dragon and the State Treasurers, broadcast on March 30, 2023, Kreifels recommended the book Cobalt Red by Siddharth Kara. He mentioned the work while addressing the topic of lithium batteries and the severe realities of cobalt mining carried out by children in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Kreifels noted that he was reading the book at the time and emphasized that he did not profit in any way from promoting it. The book offers a detailed examination of the human and environmental costs associated with the global demand for minerals essential to modern technology. By bringing up the title, Kreifels aimed to draw attention to these hidden supply chain abuses and the difficult ethical questions surrounding contemporary green energy initiatives and corporate responsibility. The discussion highlighted the troubling conditions under which raw materials are extracted, prompting listeners to reflect on the broader global implications of consumer electronics and electric vehicle manufacturing.
