Why people recommend it
Two Lives by Janet Malcolm is an incisive dual biographical work that explores the intertwined existence and creative partnership of Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas against the backdrop of occupied France during the Second World War. On The Book Review podcast during the episode titled An Outsider Finds Suspense in Hollywood, released on July 18, 2024, Parul Sehgal discussed the exceptional quality of Malcolm's writing. Sehgal expressed deep admiration for the author's profound understanding of human relationships, specifically praising the book about Gertrude and Alice as a personal favorite. The publication examines how the famous couple managed to survive the war years in relative obscurity and safety, while also probing the archival record, the nuances of their daily routines, and the controversies surrounding their wartime actions and loyalties. Through her enthusiastic remarks on the podcast, Sehgal highlighted Malcolm's signature investigative rigor and psychological depth in unpacking complex personal bonds. The mention directs listeners toward a masterclass in biographical writing that refuses easy answers, instead offering a nuanced, beautifully crafted portrait of two monumental literary figures and the enigmatic partnership that sustained them through extraordinary historical turmoil.
