True Grit by Charles Portis is a classic American novel following the fierce young Mattie Ross as she hires a one-eyed U.S. Marshal to track down her father's killer in the old West. On The Book Review, Pamela Paul recommended the novel, noting that she had just finished reading it. John Williams also urged readers to pick up the book, calling it an obvious choice and a nearly perfect piece of literature in its own way. Williams additionally observed that while Portis remained most famous for this particular title, critics had long viewed him as an undervalued writer, leading him to reach his maximum readership. In another episode of The Book Review, Juman Katib mentioned reading Portis's novel over the holidays for the first time, while A.O.
