Why people recommend it
Time's Arrow by Martin Amis is a structurally daring and controversial novel that tells the life story of a Nazi doctor in reverse, beginning with his death and ending in the womb. The book has been highlighted on prominent podcasts by literary critics and cultural commentators examining the author's virtuosic narrative techniques. On The Book Review podcast, guest A.O. Scott discussed the famous novel while acknowledging Martin Amis's immense literary skill in rendering a Holocaust narrative entirely backwards. Similarly, Douglas Murray brought up the novel during an appearance on The Jordan B. Peterson Podcast, noting that he was deeply struck by the work which Amis published in the 1990s. Murray emphasized how controversial the book was at the time due to its reversed chronology, where every event in the plot moves backward in time, creating a chilling yet brilliant meditation on historical atrocity and human memory. Together, these podcast discussions underscore the lasting impact of Amis's formal experiment and its ongoing status as a major work of late-twentieth-century fiction that forces readers to confront the horrors of history from a completely disorienting perspective.
