The Shards by Bret Easton Ellis is a psychological thriller featuring the author as the protagonist. Jason Calacanis recommended the book on This Week in Startups in February 2026, recalling how Ellis had originally serialized the thriller and read it aloud on his podcast before releasing it on Patreon. Calacanis praised the serialized format and the book itself as fantastic. Lon Harris also discussed the work on This Week in Startups in August 2026 during an episode analyzing industry trends. Harris expressed admiration for Ellis's broader literary bibliography, including Psycho and Lunar Park. He noted that several years prior, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Ellis had decided to serialize the novel featuring his own name and persona as the main character. Through these conversations, the podcast hosts highlighted Ellis's innovative approach to publishing and serializing his fiction directly to fans.
