The best things said about it
The whole biography is written with the air of like Yeah. She's just utterly unimpressed by a lot of this guy's life. I love that. I love that. But also fascinated by him and compelled to chronicle it. It's an interesting book.
And here's how Lucy Hughes Howlet describes it in one of the most deliciously catty sections of her book. You whose own spirit is so hardworking and so generous must understand me.
Why people recommend it
The Pike: Gabriele d’Annunzio, Poet, Seducer and Preacher of War by Lucy Hughes-Hallett is a deeply researched and critically acclaimed biography of the flamboyant Italian poet and proto-fascist political figure. On Behind the Bastards, host Robert Evans offered glowing praise for the book, describing it as one of the best and most compulsively readable biographies he had ever encountered. Evans highlighted Hughes-Hallett's brilliant writing style, noting that she maintained an utterly unimpressed yet deeply fascinated perspective on D'Annunzio's eccentric and dangerous life. Throughout the episodes, Evans read passages from the biography to illuminate various stages of the subject's life, from his childhood near-falls from trees and the harsh reactions of his parents to his calculated political maneuvers and interactions with national leaders. Alongside co-host Shereen Lani Younes, Evans appreciated the author's ability to maintain a skeptical air while painstakingly chronicling how a poet managed to invent many of the theatrical trappings that would later define modern fascism.
