Why people recommend it
The Magicians by Lev Grossman is a contemporary fantasy novel that follows a group of young adults discovering that magic is real, combining dark themes with a meta-fictional approach to traditional fantasy tropes. On SmartLess, Will Arnett asked Margot Robbie if she had ever read the book series, describing it as a grown-up, dark version of Narnia. On The Book Review, host Gilbert Cruz spoke with Lev Grossman about his breakthrough fantasy trilogy, noting how the narrative features characters who have read fantasy fiction and consequently find themselves living inside fantasy stories. Grossman reflected on the writing process during the interview, sharing that crafting The Magicians allowed him to find his distinct voice as a writer and fully master his craft after publishing earlier works. Across these podcast episodes, the book was celebrated for its subversion of classic portal-fantasy tropes and its sophisticated exploration of adult disillusionment within magical settings.
