Why people recommend it
The House of Broken Angels is a rich, expansive novel by Luis Alberto Urrea that chronicles a sprawling Mexican-American family gathering in San Diego to celebrate and mourn the final birthday of its aging patriarch, Angel de la Cruz. The book received significant acclaim and was featured on The Book Review podcast, where host Gilbert Cruz introduced Urrea and his new novel at the opening of the episode All in the Family. Additionally, the title was selected for the podcast's book club, as discussed by Elizabeth Flock and Pamela Paul on the episode Taffy Brodesser-Akner Talks About Her First Novel. Flock announced the selection of the novel for July and reminded listeners that Urrea had previously appeared as a guest on the podcast to discuss this very book. Critics and readers continually praise the novel for its vibrant humor, profound emotional resonance, and its vivid exploration of cultural identity, familial loyalty, and the immigrant experience in contemporary America.
