Why people recommend it
The Fountains of Silence is a historical novel by Ruta Sepetys set in Madrid during the Franco regime, exploring secrets, danger, and the scars of the Spanish Civil War. On an episode of The Book Review titled Ruta Sepetys Talks About 'I Must Betray You', broadcast on July 18, 2024, host Pamela Paul discussed the author's wider literary output. Paul recommended several works by Sepetys for the listeners, noting her most recent release, I Must Betray You, alongside her earlier acclaimed titles including Between Shades of Gray, Salt to the Sea, and The Fountains of Silence. By listing these historical novels together, Paul provided a comprehensive overview of the author's career, highlighting her dedication to uncovering hidden historical traumas through accessible young adult and historical fiction. The recommendation encouraged listeners to explore the breadth of Sepetys's bibliography, recognizing her consistent ability to craft emotionally powerful narratives set against difficult and turbulent periods of twentieth-century history.
