Why people recommend it
The Disney Revolt by Jake S. Friedman is a detailed historical account examining the turbulent events surrounding the 1941 Disney animation strike. Robert Evans recommended the book on Behind the Bastards during the episode Part One: The Dennis the Menace Creator was a Shockingly Bad Man in March 2024. While exploring the controversial history and labor disputes of the era, Evans utilized Friedman's research to provide listeners with accurate background information regarding animator salaries and the severe workplace tensions that plagued the studio at the time. By drawing upon The Disney Revolt, Evans offered a well-researched perspective on the institutional conditions and management practices that led creative workers to organize against studio leadership. The book serves as a vital resource for understanding the intersection of corporate power, artistic labor, and unionization within the golden age of American animation, shedding light on figures and conflicts that shaped the industry for decades to follow, all of which Evans incorporated into his historical narrative of bad actors in entertainment history.
