Why people recommend it
Something Must Be Done About Prince Edward County by Kristen Green is a historical non-fiction work examining school desegregation and a pivotal civil rights battle in a Virginia town where children had to cross county lines for education. Pamela Paul featured the author and her book across multiple segments on The Book Review in mid-2024. Throughout these discussions, Paul introduced Green as the author who documented the local struggles, community divisions, and the broader historical implications of the county's actions. Paul also questioned Green directly about the origins of the striking title, exploring why those exact words resonated so powerfully within the historical context of the civil rights movement. The podcast discussions focused on how the book uncovers hidden local histories, examining the profound impact of massive resistance policies on generations of students and families. By bringing these overlooked historical events to light, Green's work serves as a crucial examination of racial injustice and educational inequality in America, earning significant attention and thoughtful analysis from literary interviewers and hosts seeking to understand the deep roots of modern civil rights struggles.
