Why people recommend it
Ralph Waldo Emerson: Selected Essays, Lectures and Poems gathers the influential philosophical writings of the foundational American transcendentalist thinker. On The Book Review podcast during the episode titled Dana Spiotta Talks About ‘Wayward’, released on July 18, 2024, guest John Williams spoke about his ongoing literary pursuits during the conversation. Williams mentioned that he had been spending time reading a biography of Emerson authored by Robert D. Richardson, noting that it had been quite a while since he first picked it up. Although the conversation touched upon other contemporary releases and writing projects, Williams highlighted his engagement with the biographical study of the nineteenth-century essayist. Robert D. Richardson's biographical work explores the intellectual evolution, personal struggles, and profound philosophical development of Emerson against the backdrop of a changing America. Through Williams's brief mention on the podcast, listeners gain insight into the enduring appeal of transcendentalist thought and the value of returning to the foundational figures of American literature through deeply researched biographical examinations that illuminate the minds behind the classic essays, lectures, and poems that continue to shape modern literary and philosophical discourse.
