Why people recommend it
Principia Discordia by Greg Hill is a foundational satirical text of Discordianism, a postmodern, parody religion that critiques authority, consensus reality, and dogmatic thinking through humor and chaos. In an episode of Behind the Bastards titled Part Five: A Complete History of the Illuminati, guest Margaret Killjoy brought up this countercultural classic during a discussion about secret societies and underground philosophies. Rather than offering a standard literary review, Killjoy leaned into the anarchic spirit of the book by jokingly encouraging all listeners to go out and literally steal copies of the Principia Discordia from bookstores. Her playful remark reflected the chaotic, anti-establishment ethos embedded within the text itself, which famously advocates for subverting conventional structures through absurdity and creative disruption. The book combines zany mythology, philosophical essays, and bizarre illustrations to challenge readers to question their assumptions about truth and order. Killjoy's humorous call to action highlighted the enduring cult status of the text among modern iconoclasts and freethinkers. By invoking the title in a historical exploration of the Illuminati, the podcast connected centuries of real and imagined conspiracy theories to the playful, reality-bending traditions of modern Discordian philosophy.
