Why people recommend it
Pax is a historical nonfiction book by Tom Holland that explores the historical and political dynamics of the Roman Empire. During an appearance on The Ezra Klein Show in the episode titled Two Attorneys Rank the Severity of Trump’s Indictments, released on September 26, 2023, David French offered the title as part of the program's traditional closing book recommendations. Clarifying the author's identity for the audience, David French noted that the writer was the British popular historian rather than the fictional superhero, and explained that the book focused specifically on the historical peak of the Roman Empire. By recommending the publication on the podcast, the speaker directed listeners toward engaging, accessible historical scholarship that illuminates ancient political structures and imperial power dynamics. The suggestion complemented the episode's broader themes of governance, authority, and the historical weight of institutions by offering a deeply researched look into antiquity.
