Conceited the book is that the secret societies are in fact evil.

Why people recommend it

Leigh Bardugo's Ninth House is a dark fantasy novel set at Yale University that follows a protagonist tangled up with the campus's occult secret societies. On The Book Review, Gilbert Cruz introduced Leigh Bardugo to discuss the instant New York Times bestseller, exploring plot points involving Yale and the suspicious circumstances surrounding the protagonist's admission and hidden strings attached. Paul Krugman recommended the fantasy novel on The Ezra Klein Show as his final recommendation, noting that his background as a Yale undergraduate gave him a particular appreciation for the book's premise involving the university's secret societies. MJ Franklin recounted on The Book Review that she read the first book in the series while sick and hibernating during the pandemic to keep herself company. In further discussions on The Book Review, Leigh Bardugo explained her transition into writing darker adult novels such as Ninth House and Hell Bent, and detailed how she incorporated elements of her own background and research into Ladino for the protagonist Alex Stern. Listeners and commentators recommend the novel for its immersive blend of dark academia, supernatural mystery, and sharp institutional critique, praising Bardugo's ability to ground fantastical elements within a vividly rendered, atmospheric university setting that subverts traditional tropes.
