Why people recommend it
My War Criminal by Jessica Stern is an analytical exploration examining the psychological and personal profiles of individuals involved in mass violence and war crimes. The book was featured extensively across multiple episodes of Behind the Bastards in September 2026, where Robert Evans discussed it as a resource for exploring the background of Radovan Karadűić. Evans noted that Stern's work provides an unprecedented level of detail concerning Karadűić's family dynamics and personal life, although he also raised certain critiques regarding the author's framing and the book's title. Specifically, Evans referenced the text to examine historical accounts surrounding a murder allegedly committed by Karadűić's father, and he shared an unusual anecdote from the book describing Karadűić's past tenure as a soccer team psychologist, during which he instructed players to imagine themselves as bumblebees. Additionally, Jennifer Szalai mentioned the book on The Book Review in July 2024, introducing her evaluation of the text by highlighting Stern's professional background as a dedicated scholar specializing in the study of terrorism and trauma.
