Why people recommend it
Marjoe by Howard Smith and Sarah Kernochan is a compelling look at the religious revival circuit and the mechanics of religious performance. On Behind the Bastards, during the episode titled Part One: TB Joshua: The Evangelical Pastor Who Built His Own Hell in February 2024, Robert Evans discussed the subject. While talking about figures who manufactured their own spiritual paths, he stated that there was a documentary he always recommended called Marjoe, which followed a man who began his career as a child pastor. Evans used this recommendation to illustrate how child pastors and televangelists routinely fabricated their personal backstories and deceived audiences in order to extract money from believers. He highlighted the project as a primary reference point for understanding the deceptive practices deeply embedded within certain evangelical and revivalist traditions, demonstrating the ways ambitious operators manipulated spiritual fervor for personal financial gain.
