The one that blew my mind, and nine out of 10 people hate this book, so it's a very strong caveat, but it's Little, Big by John Crowley, who's actually a poet by training. It is so unbelievably good. You have to slog through the first 150 pages but, beyond that, it's absolutely stunning.

Why people recommend it
Little, Big by John Crowley is an intricate, epic fantasy novel that follows the mystical, generations-spanning history of the Drinkwater family and their eccentric estate near the edge of a magical realm. The book has received high praise across multiple podcast appearances by Tim Ferriss, notably on The Tim Ferriss Show and Modern Wisdom. Ferriss frequently highlighted the novel as one of the absolute best he had ever read, describing it as an intense, mind-altering literary experience that can leave readers in an altered state for weeks. However, he also offered a strong caveat, noting that nine out of ten people might struggle with it or even dislike the experience, partly due to its slow buildup. Ferriss explained that the author, John Crowley, is a poet by training, which accounts for why the dense prose takes a long time to warm up. He warned that readers must push through the initial hundred and fifty pages before the narrative truly takes off, but insisted that the stunning payoff makes the initial slog entirely worthwhile. Despite the heavy demands it places on the audience, Ferriss repeatedly returned to the title as a masterclass in imaginative fiction and a rare, psychedelic journey in book form.
