Why people recommend it

Joe Hill: the Graphic Novel Collection compiles terrifying and imaginative comic book stories written by acclaimed author Joe Hill alongside collaborators like Jason Ciaramella, Stephen King, Chris Ryall, and Zach Howard. On StarTalk Radio, Mathias Clasen mentioned reading books by Joe Hill during an October 2021 episode titled BOO! The Science of Scary with Mathias Clasen & Heather Berlin. Speaking with host Neil deGrasse Tyson and co-host Heather Berlin, Clasen discussed his enjoyment of Hill's work while exploring the psychological and scientific intersection of comedy and horror. Clasen noted that Hill stands out as one of his favorite contemporary writers, specifically pointing out the authorial ability to blend terrifying premises with a distinct sense of humor. The conversation explored why audiences enjoy being scared and how creative storytelling can evoke both laughter and fear simultaneously. By highlighting Hill's writing, Clasen contributed to a broader scientific and cultural dialogue about the mechanics of horror entertainment and the ways skilled authors manipulate audience emotions through compelling narrative structures. His mention of the author reinforced the idea that effective horror often relies on nuanced character work, unexpected comedic timing, and deeply engaging plots that keep readers captivated even as they confront unsettling themes and supernatural horrors.
