Why people recommend it
Jawbreaker by Gary Berntsen and Ralph Pezzullo is a gripping non-fiction account detailing the CIA's deployment of the secret Jawbreaker team into Afghanistan following the September 11 attacks. During an appearance on The Shawn Ryan Show in September 2022, specifically on episode thirty-six featuring Lieutenant Colonel Scott Mann and titled Operation Pineapple Express, the book became a focal point of discussion regarding the early days of the conflict. Guest Scott Mann brought up the publication while talking to the host about the intricate dynamics of the American response in the region. Mann noted that the CIA operatives featured in the book formed the crucial pilot team that effectively paved the way for the Green Berets and Special Forces teams that arrived subsequently to conduct operations. Through this reference, Mann provided listeners with historical context on the ground-level intelligence efforts that preceded major military maneuvers. The mention highlighted the foundational role played by intelligence operatives in shaping the initial phase of the Afghan war, directing interested followers toward the detailed literary account of those clandestine missions.
