Why people recommend it

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë is a celebrated Victorian novel following the turbulent life and emotional maturation of its eponymous orphaned protagonist. On The Book Review, John Williams noted a reader recommendation praising the novel's emotional intensity, and later discussed his own preference for Jane Eyre over Wuthering Heights because it features more narrative depth. Francine Prose mentioned on How I Write that she once taught the novel alongside Great Expectations, describing it as the greatest representation of female rage in literature. Similarly, Brandon Taylor discussed on The Book Review how characters in his own novel riffed on the classic text and its tragic mulatto tropes. Greg Coles also referenced Williams's engagement with the book, and Juliette Fogra shared on The Jordan B. Peterson Podcast that the intimidating atmosphere of the teachers in Jane Eyre reminded her of her own time in music school. Across these appearances, contributors highlighted the novel's enduring thematic relevance and emotional power.
