Why people recommend it
Into the Wood Chipper by Nicholas Enrich is a book that examines a dramatic real-world scenario involving institutional policy, bureaucratic missteps, and technological implementation. On The Ezra Klein Show podcast, billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates recommended the book during the closing book recommendation portion of the September 29, 2026 episode titled Bill Gates’s Blunt Warning on A.I. Gates brought up the title as his second recommendation, connecting it directly to previous topics covered in the conversation. Introducing the book as apropos of what they had just discussed, Gates explained to host Ezra Klein that the narrative centers on an unusual situation. He recounted that somebody chose to skip a party over the weekend and instead decided to take action regarding USAID, which ultimately led to the dramatic metaphorical outcome of putting it into the wood chipper. Through this brief yet intriguing recommendation, Gates highlighted a piece of literature that critiques administrative processes and government programs, offering listeners a cautionary and engaging tale of institutional decision-making, policy failure, and the unexpected consequences that can arise when individuals intervene in massive bureaucratic systems.
