Why people recommend it
Guns, Gold, and Caravans by Robert Easton is a biographical account detailing the extraordinary life and times of Fred Meyer Schroeder, chronicling his daring adventures across Asia and beyond. Ben Bowlin recommended the biography on the January 2, 2024 episode of Stuff They Don't Want You To Know during a classic episode about the secrets of the hidden Chinese pyramid. Bowlin brought up the book to clarify a historical misconception, explaining to listeners that Schroeder was a real historical person rather than a journalistic pseudonym or a fictional invention. He noted that while the extraordinary tales might sound like fiction, readers can examine the detailed account written by Robert Easton to understand Schroeder's authentic historical footprint. The book served as a crucial piece of evidence in the podcast's exploration of explorers, lost civilizations, and travelers' accounts from remote regions of the world. By highlighting Easton's work, the podcast validated the bizarre yet true stories of historical adventurers, offering listeners a tangible literary source to verify the remarkable life events of a largely forgotten figure whose journeys intersected with major historical mysteries in Asia.
