Grief is the thing with feathers

Why people recommend it

Grief is the thing with feathers by Max Porter is a poignant debut novel that explores the raw, chaotic aftermath of a sudden loss through the perspectives of a grieving father and his two young sons, whose mourning is physically manifested by a chaotic, talking crow. On The Book Review, Greg Cowles recommended Max Porter's debut novel, noting that readers might recognize the title as a clever literary reference to Emily Dickinson's famous poem about hope, while explaining how the book portrays a father dealing with the sudden death of his young wife. Later, on SmartLess, Benedict Cumberbatch brought up the same novella while discussing his new film project, describing the story as an exploration of a family's first year of mourning and praising Max Porter as a heroic literary titan. Both podcast discussions highlighted the unique blend of prose, poetry, and fable within the book, emphasizing how the author brilliantly transforms familiar poetic motifs into a deeply moving exploration of sorrow, family dynamics, and the strange, persistent nature of grief that arrives suddenly and refuses to quietly leave.
