I mean, look at 50 Shades of Grey. That got middle-aged women wanting sex with women who hadn't wanted sex for 20 years.

The best things said about it
50 Shades of Grey came out of a fanfiction post just like that like it was written originally as a fanfiction post around Twilight.
How many copies did that sell? 10 million, 20 million, 30, a hundred million, I don't know.
Tim Ferriss How I Write · Dec 2023 Like if you if you think about how well all of these fantasy novels like romance novels do um if we think about how incredible 50 Shades of Gray did like I don't know the numbers on that.

Why people recommend it
Grey by E L James is an erotic romance novel that retells the events of Fifty Shades of Grey from the perspective of Christian Grey, following its origins as a popular fanfiction post. On Modern Wisdom, Chris Williamson referenced the immense commercial success of the Fifty Shades series while discussing age limits for romantic literature and exploring differences in sexual fantasies between men and women. Robert Evans mentioned the book on Behind the Bastards to illustrate how some modern texts evolve directly from online fanfiction communities. On My First Million, Shaan Puri similarly cited the franchise as a prime example of a blockbuster publishing success born from a Twilight fanfiction project. Tim Ferriss brought up the sales figures on How I Write to argue that a provocative premise can sometimes matter more than traditional stylistic writing quality. Additionally, Tracey Cox noted on The Diary Of A CEO with Steven Bartlett that the broader erotic series successfully revived sexual desire and intimacy for many middle-aged women who had previously lost interest.
